Gabriel

Gabriel Salazar Vergara, a Chilean historian was born 31 January 1936. In Chile, he's best known for his research in the field of social history as well as the understanding of the social movements. These include the recent student protests from 2006 and 2011. Salazar was born into a middle class family. He was educated in history as well as sociology and the philosophy department at Universidad de Chile, and for time he was the assistant to his mentors, historian Mario Gongora and classical historian Hector Herrera Cajas. Salazar was one of the Revolutionary Left Movement member from 1973 until 1973. 2] In 1973, Salazar was tortured at Villa Grimaldi by the military. He was released in 1976 from a military prison camp and was exiled to the United Kingdom. He was awarded one of the scholarships that enabled him to continue studies at University of Hull. He was awarded the PhD in Economic and Social History from the university in the year 1984. After that the same year, he returned to Chile. Salazar had been a bit unknown up until 1985 when he made his debut. The subjects he studied included peons, labourers, children Huachos, women and children. Salazar is one founder of Nueva Historia Social which is a historical current. Salazar considers history as an important tool for the social sphere.
