Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford later applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her debut on television in a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
